Lemonade Stand

At age ten, I was completely broke.

Two girls came to live in our home that year. They came with a mom and two brothers, but I thought about them less. My parents welcomed their family into ours.

Springtime broke into the Estes Valley, creating unlimited opportunities for pinecone and spear grass wars. I tried to express my affection for the new ladies by throwing a handful of needles into their backs. They were far from twitter pated.

Running away from my advances, they turned my brother’s and my eyes towards something far greater than sharp thistles and sap between our fingers. I agreed, anything to spend more time with them. They called it, “Entrepreneurship”. I called it, “Lemonade”.

Every kid has started a lemonade stand. Usually it’s not front page news. But, at the age of four, Ben Weissenstein was featured on the cover of The Houston Chronicle, touting lemonade for 25 cents a cup. Ben only earned a few dollars that day, but he came away with a thirst for entrepreneurship that motivates him to this day.

When Ben was 14, he helped his mom with a garage sale. She suggested that he could help friends and neighbors sell and organize their extra junk. So Ben and his friend started a business. In a few years, Grand Slam Garage Sales had expanded to offer more services and employ over thirty part-time workers.

For the last week or so, I have been exchanging emails with a bright young lady who wants to start a business. Initially she wanted to pursue something other than a lemonade stand. However, she weighed her options and decided to go with selling lemonade.

She spent several hours outside without selling a single cup. There are a few lessons to be learned from Chelsea’s lemonade stand.
