Day 2: Purchase Domain and Hosting – Where, How and with Coupons

Purchase Domain and Hosting for Your Website

by Nicholas Tart · 0 comments

“It’s about eight bucks for a domain and you get your first month of hosting for a cent. So, give it a few months. If you fail, you’re down $25, maximum. There’s no better feeling than knowing that you don’t have to rely on anyone for money.”
Michael Dunlop

The internet in 2010 is a lot like the Wild West: it’s still new, rude, crude, and there aren’t a lot of rules. Also like the Wild West, there’s still so much property online that it’s relatively cheap to stake a claim.

That means getting your own website, a few acres of virtual property to call home. For now, it’s still inexpensive and easy to get started online – and a website is practically essential if you want to spread a message or make money online.

Below, we’ll walk you through exactly how to lasso up a domain name and hosting service. We’ve done our homework and we’re giving you the best, cheapest, and most reliable way. Plus, you’ll find two coupons to save $18.95 on your domain and hosting.

By the time you get to the bottom of this page, you’ll be the proud owner of your own website.

Buying Your Domain

“In the beginning, I would just get a domain name and start putting a design on it. I wouldn’t have any business plan; I wouldn’t know how to monetize it. That was the reason why a lot of my time was wasted.”
Syed Balkhi

Q: What do Google, YouTube, and Facebook have in common?

A: They all started with the simple purchase of a domain.

Why You Need Your Own Domain

The only way to own your website is by buying your own domain. You can set up a site for free on sites like WordPress.com, Blogger.com, etc.

But if you go the “free” route, your site will exist at [yoursite].WordPress.com and WordPress will have the rights to your site and all of your content. Plus, your ability to make money off of your website is extremely limited if you don’t have your own domain.

Here are a few more benefits to buying your own domain at $7.49 per year (when you use the coupon).

  • You can make money directly off of your website.
  • Your site will appear more credible to your visitors.
  • You have control over your website.
  • You can sell your site for a big pay-off down the road. Without owning a domain, technically you don’t own your website, so you’ll never be able to sell it.
  • You won’t have to bother with transferring all the files when you do decide to get your own domain. (Something that took me six months to do when I made this mistake.)

YoungEntrepreneurCollageSmallT

All 25 of our young entrepreneurs have their own domains. 19 out of the 25 have multiple domains. And 12 of them own [theirname].com. The other 13 probably wish they did.

Where to Register Your Domain

Here are a few websites where you can register your domain:

Registrar .com* .net* .org* .biz* .tv*
GoDaddy $7.49 (w/coupon) $6.99 $14.99 $5.99 $39.99
1&1 $7.99 $7.99 $7.99 $8.99 $29.99
Namecheap $9.98 $9.98 $9.69 $9.69 $25.00
Massdomains $9.99 $9.99 $9.99 $9.99 $39.99
Domain.com $10.47 $8.99 $10.47 $10.47 $29.99
IPower $10.95 $10.95 $10.95 $7.29
Dotster $16.45 $8.99 $16.45 $16.45 $29.99

Our Recommendation is GoDaddy

GoDaddy is the biggest domain registrar in the world. They’re not going to drop your domain anytime soon. But this fact doesn’t necessarily make them the best option. Here are a few reasons why we recommend GoDaddy to register your domain:

  • It’s the cheapest (unless you want a .tv, then go with Namecheap).
  • They have 24/7 sales and support (which I’ve used about a dozen times).
  • They’re customer support is located in the U.S.
  • Bob Parsons, GoDaddy’s founder, has an incredible entrepreneurial story.
  • We’ll be using GoDaddy as the example registrar for the rest of this course.

When registering your domain, it’s a no-brainer. Go with GoDaddy.com. They are the best option, by far, especially with this coupon:

GoDaddy Coupon Code: “cjc749fat”
(to save $9.00 per .com registered for two years)

Alex Fraiser

Alex Fraiser bought all of his domains through GoDaddy and he said, “we couldn’t be happier.”

When you buy your domain from GoDaddy, only add the .com to your account in the first screen. Then a window will popup and they’ll offer the other domains (i.e. the .org, .net, .biz, etc.) for a special deal. Add all of those domains because that is the cheapest you will ever be able to buy them. Just hold off on adding them on the first screen.

Purchasing Your Hosting

“I couldn’t pay the hosting bills for my blogs, so my blogs got stopped. It was just a huge mess that slowed me down for a couple of months. I wish that I had that time back.”
Alex Fraiser

It’s not a party if it doesn’t have a host.

What is Hosting?

Hosting is a service you need to purchase in order to put your website on the internet. You’re renting server space from a company that promises to always have their servers running. This way, people from around the world can access your site at any time of day.

Your only other option for getting your website on the internet is to purchase a dedicated server or your own server. This will cost you anywhere from $100 per month to a couple thousand dollars upfront. Unless you’re getting 100,000’s of visitors per day, a normal hosting package is best.

Michael Dunlop

Michael Dunlop started all of his sites through a simple hosting package with HostGator. Once he started making money and getting significant traffic, he upgraded to hosting with VPS.net. But he still recommends starting with HostGator.

Why do You Need Hosting?

Without hosting, you can’t put your website on the internet. It’s that simple. You can build your website on your computer, but the only way to allow other people to visit it is by hosting it on a server.

Alex Fraiser

Alex Fraiser starts by building all of his websites on his computer. Then, when they’re ready, he uploads them to his hosting account to make them “live”.

Where to Buy Hosting

Here are a few places where you can purchase your hosting:

Hosting Service Space Bandwidth Emails WordPress Price*
1&1 10GB Unlimited 600 No $3.99
WPWebHost 50GB 500GB Unlimited Yes $5.00
HostGator Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Yes $5.53**
GoDaddy 150GB Unlimited 500 Yes $5.99
Blue Host Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Yes $6.95
Massdomains 150GB Unlimited 500 Yes $6.99
DreamHost Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Yes $8.95

*Starting price per month for a 24-month subscription. Subject to change.
** Get first month for 1 cent with coupon code: juniorbiz1

Our Recommendation is HostGator

HostGator is the cheapest hosting company that offers everything you need to run a successful website.

  • Unlimited space means you can put as many pages and images on your site as you want.
  • Unlimited bandwidth means that your website can handle as many visitors as you can possibly drive to it.
  • It’s nice to be able to create as many email accounts under [example]@[yourdomain].com as you want.
  • The one-click install of WordPress is an incredible feature that most hosts have started including. A year ago, I spent several hours manually installing WordPress. Now it takes 5 minutes.
  • $5.53 per month is dirt cheap. Plus, if you use the coupon code (“juniorbiz1”) you get the first month for 1 cent or $9.94 off your total package.
  • We’ll be using HostGator as the example hosting service for the rest of this course.

When choosing your hosting, HostGator is the best option. Especially with this coupon:

HostGator Coupon Code: “juniorbiz1”
(to get first month for 1 cent or save $9.95 on any hosting package)

Syed Balkhi

I asked Syed Balkhi, owner of one of the biggest WordPress sites in the world, “What is the best hosting company?” Without hesitation he told me, “HostGator”.

If you have multiple domains that you want to host under the same account, I recommend you upgrade to the “Baby Plan” for an extra $3 per month. It’s much cheaper than paying for multiple hosting accounts for all of your domains.

How to Host a GoDaddy Domain on HostGator

“If you’re a young entrepreneur and you’re trying to make it big online, don’t think that you can’t do it. With the internet the way it is now, you can do anything.”
Adam Horwitz

Like peanut butter and chocolate, some things are just better when you put them together.

Be Patient

Once you purchase your domain and hosting, there’s one more step to getting your site online. It might take a few hours for HostGator to setup your spot on their servers. They’ll tell you that it could take up to 24 hours, but it’s never taken me more than an hour or two. Just be patient.

Michael Dunlop

Michael Dunlop offers a service to set up blogs for his visitors. For his highly trained staff, it still takes them two days to get everything in order.

Switch Nameservers

In the meantime, you need to switch your nameservers so GoDaddy knows that you’re hosting your domains on HostGator. This is really simple. We’ll walk you through it near the bottom of this page.

Alex Fraiser

Alex Fraiser buys his domains on GoDaddy and hosts them on WPWebHost because you save money when you buy your domain and hosting separately.

Switching nameservers is a simple task that you only have to do once to save a few dollars per month.

Take Action

This process took me 38 minutes. Let’s see if you can beat the “Mast-uh”!

Buy Your Domain (if you haven’t already)

  1. Go to GoDaddy.com.
  2. Type in the domain name you wish to purchase and hit “Enter”.
  3. Make sure the .com is selected and click “Add”.
  4. Scroll down a bit and search [yourname].com to see if it’s available.
  5. If it is, add that domain to your cart as well.
  6. Important: Click “Continue to Registrationbefore adding any other domains.
  7. A window will popup offering you a huge discount on the other variations of your domain (i.e. .net, .org, etc.). If you want this domain to reflect your company name, we suggest getting all the other domains now because this is the cheapest they will ever be. That’s if they’re even still available a few months from now.
  8. Click “Add” to the offer you would like to accept.
  9. Sign in or fill out the form to create your account and click “Next”.
  10. Register your domain for at least two years because Google gives preference to websites that are registered for two years or more.
  11. Make sure “Uncertified” is checked. This is their first attempt to scare more money out of you and it’s unnecessary.
  12. Click “Next”. (You’ll set your nameservers later.)
  13. Choose “Standard” and click “Next”. (Scare tactic #2)
  14. Don’t buy email, hosting or anything else. Your hosting account will give you free email addresses and you will get a much better deal on hosting at HostGator.
  15. Click “Next”.
  16. Review your shopping cart and make sure all the information is correct.
  17. Enter the promo code “cjc749fat” in the yellow box on the right to save $9.00 on your .com (assuming you are registering it for two years).
  18. Click “Continue to Checkout”.
  19. Select your payment method and fill out the forms.
  20. Click “Place order now”.
  21. Print a copy of the confirmation for your records and save the emails they send regarding your domain information.

First step done!

GoDaddy Coupon Code: “cjc749fat”
(to save $9.00 per .com registered for two years)

Purchase Your Hosting

  1. Go to HostGator.com.
  2. Click “View Web Hosting Plans”.
  3. If you only purchased one domain and its variations (i.e. [yourcompany].com, [yourcompany].net, etc.), order the “Hatchling Plan”. Your variations (.net, .org, etc.) will be redirected to the .com in your GoDaddy account.
  4. If you purchased more than one domain (i.e. [yourcompany].com and [yourname].com), you can save money by ordering the “Baby Plan”.
  5. Enter your domain name in the “I Currently Have a Domain Name” section.
  6. Enter the coupon code “juniorbiz1” to save $9.94 on your hosting package.
  7. They already put a coupon code in that area and say that it’s the “most valuable coupon!” That’s not true. If you use “juniorbiz1”, that’s the best deal they will give you. Try it with both codes and see for yourself.

  8. Choose a billing cycle of 24 months to get a larger discount and to coincide with your domain.
  9. Create an account with a username and security pin.
  10. Fill out your billing information.
  11. Review your order details and click “Create Account”.
  12. Print a copy of the confirmation for your records and save the emails they send you about your hosting information.

Second step done. One more and you’re live!

HostGator Coupon Code: “juniorbiz1”
(to get first month for 1 cent or save $9.95 on any hosting package)

Connect GoDaddy to HostGator through Nameservers

  1. Go to GoDaddy.com and login at the top.
  2. Click “Domain Manager” on the left.
  3. Select the domain(s) you’d like to host on HostGator (probably all of them).
  4. Hover over Nameservers and click “Set Nameservers”.
  5. Select “I have specific nameservers for my domains.
  6. Now go back to your inbox and open up the email HostGator sent you that says “your name servers.”
  7. In the GoDaddy Nameservers panel, replace the nameserver in the “Nameserver 1:” box with the first value that HostGator sent you. It should be XXXXXX.hostgator.com with the X’s being specific values assigned to you (i.e. ns1998.hostgator.com).
  8. Then replace “Nameserver 2:” with the second value that HostGator sent you.
  9. Click “Ok”.
  10. Login to your HostGator account and add your GoDaddy domain to your hosting plan.

Finally! Done.

Now it will take an hour or two for HostGator and GoDaddy to recognize the changes you made. Go make a sandwich and shoot some hoops. When you come back, you can check your domain and there should be a new landing page.

See you at the top,
Nick Tart and Nick Scheidies
