New JuniorBiz Logos, Please Vote: JJ Entry #18

by Nicholas Tart on June 24, 2009 · 35 comments

Ad Infinitum, a student-run advertising agency at CSU, has been designing several new logos for me for the last month or so. Today I received an email from Katie Matteo, one of the officers of the group, with 6 logo designs. I have posted them in this article. I value your opinion so please take a look and let me know what you think.

Note: You can see the final logo in the heading at the top of this page. It’s an evolution from Option 5.

After determining your favorite design, place your vote in the “Market Research” area on the right side of this page.

Important:Keep in mind, these are the initial drafts of the logos and they can be altered, added to or even combined. Nothing is final, so if you have any suggestions (colors, alterations, etc.), please leave them in the comments area below. Focus on how they can be improved (i.e. the color schemes).

Option 1

JBLogo1

Option 2

JBLogo2

Option 3

JBLogo3

Option 4

JBLogo4

Option 5

JBLogo5

Option 6

JBLogo6

Now that you’ve seen them all, vote for your favorite.

Vote on the right under “Market Research” –> Thanks!

Then leave 3 things in the comments area at the bottom of this article:

  1. Your favorite logo option
  2. Why it’s your favorite
  3. How you would improve that logo (i.e. colors, etc.)

I want to thank Ad Infinitum for all of these designs. You guys are awesome! I have become addicted to staring at the logos and I really appreciate all of your hard work.

Also, I’m considering changing my tagline from “Young people, grownup business!” to “A launching pad for young entrepreneurs” or “A launching pad for young business.” Let me know what you think.

Again, it’s really important that I get as much feedback as possible about both the logos and the tagline. Thanks.

Unfortunately, JuniorBiz, I am not feeling any of them. A logo is a symbol that will last you a life time or the lifetime of your biz.

You should have a logo that works well for various ad types
Junior Biz T-Shirts
Business Cards
Website
Direct Mail

Since you are having fun making Logos, logomarker.com. It free and should get you more ideas about lettering, symbols, etc.

But, from your list above, I will order them this way:

Option 3: The leap frog to me is fitting since Juniors starting their own biz are leap frogging ahead of so many other juniors. It suggest advancement.

Option 4: I’m not really crazy about the arrows, but the colors are fitting.

Colors are wrong on 5,6 and 1.

1 is not really a logo in so much as it looks like someone’s initials.

There is nothing wrong with your tagline. Keep it. Maybe, “Young people, Grownup Businesses.”

If you are thinking about changing your tagline to include the wrong lauching, it would seem that you are also leaning towards option 3.

Hey AP, thanks for your comments and thanks for being honest! Something I should have made more clear is that these are just the initial drafts. I think most a few of the designers created black and white logos because they didn’t want to establish my company colors. So all of the logos will be colorful, I just haven’t decided what colors yet…

Do you have any recommendations for colors?

Hi Nick,

I liked 5 & 6 until you mentioned that you were thinking of changing the tagline, which would explain why the logos were frogs and rockets (I was confused at first).

5 and 6 just seem to be a little more grownup and if the teens are going to keep using the website until they are 19 or so, I think they might feel more comfortable using the promotional material if it were more mature.

Remember the survey, the kids wanted maturity, not cutesy. I would add some coloring though, to these logos.

If you do change the tagline, I like the one, “A launching pad for young business.” I have to say I like the idea of a rocket, but I don’t like any of their designs of rockets. Maybe they could work on it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good luck.

Hey Diane, thanks for your feedback. That’s something I am definitely keeping in mind. As I mentioned in my previous comment, the only reason some of them are in black and white is because I haven’t sat down and discussed colors with them yet.

The tagline is something I’m toying with and I appreciate the feedback.

Hey Nick! It’s cool that you are changing the logo– I’ll vote, but I haven’t decided yet.

Um, disregard this comment if you’ve already done keyword research and stuff.

One thing about your tagline– it’s good to be catchy, and its good to represent your blog well, but make sure that your tagline has the KEYWORDS you want people searching for your website on search engines for.

“Young entrepreneurs” and “young business” seem like good keywords for your site. However, make sure you do some research before you jump right in.

The tools most web publishers use is the Google Keyword Tool

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

I learned how to use it and a lot more interesting information from the Keyword Crash Course at the Keyword Academy.

http://thekeywordacademy.com

Yeah, I would feel kind of like an idiot if you already knew this stuff, but yeah….

Good luck with the logos and everything!

Hey Ben! Thanks for leaving your two cents. You make some really good points about the tagline keywords.

The thing about “Young people, grownup business!” is that it includes “young business” but I’m not sure if it hurts SEO that they aren’t right next to each other.

“A launching pad for young business/entrepreneurs” has them right next to each other but they are at the end of the tagline. I’ve heard that what appears at the beginning of the tagline is most important. However, “Young entrepreneurs launching pad” doesn’t sound as good.

Thanks for the feedback, Ben!

Based on some of the feedback above, maybe the logo changes for the age group. Frogs for younger junior 12-15 and something more fitting for the 16-19 range.

Thanks for the second thoughts! I’d like to have one uniform logo for the whole site but it’s something to consider. I know it’s not the same, but Google has done very well with constantly modifying their logo.

I thought about it for a bit, and I really like the ties idea, so I picked option five.

Once you change up the colors, I think it will look really good.

Also, whats up with the results page? It grouped 5 and 1 together and 3 and 1 together. It was weird. I dunno.

Again, best of luck with the logos.

Hey Ben, thanks for voting. Yeah, it’s confusing the way it looks. “Option 5, 1″ means 1 person voted for option 5. Thanks for the heads-up!

I like #1 best with the Junior Biz spelled out. I’d like to see some green in there to have the money connotation.

Also, for taglines, it is vital to ask the target kids that will be using the service. They may have some ideas on the tagline. By all means, bring your tagline ideas, but first briefly explain the business to them and have them generate some ideas (primarily what they value in the business) – then have them choose among them. Kids are awesome at seeing things in a split second and coming up with wonderful ideas.

I picked #1 because the path to success is not a straight line. I like a bee instead of a rocket since bees are industrious.

Hey Peter, I think you’re right about green. It really should be one of my colors. The bee is a good idea, too. Thanks for your comment.

Hey Nick!

My fav logo would have to be 5. You’re going to want to go with something that makes teens feel more mature and I don’t think the rocket ship or the frog do that neccessarily. 5 is clean and gets the message across. I would however, add some color to it. A shade of blue or turquoise for example. Good luck!!!

Hey Laura, that’s interesting that you chose 5 because I wasn’t sure if it would be gender-neutral. But I’m glad it could be. Thanks!

Hi Nick,

I’m going to have to agree with AP when I say that I’m not too crazy about any of the above.

Personally, I really like what you already have, but if you feel the need for change my choice would have to be for option 6, sans the hanging briefcases and with blue lettering with a white outline (very ala twitter…)

As far as changing your tagline goes. “Young people, grownup business” there should be no negative effect for SEO purposes, in fact if you did rank for “young business” that could only work out for the better. After all “young business” got searched 33,100 times last month ;-)

Just saying…

Hey Tommy, thanks for stopping by. The problem with what I have now is that it’s a free template and I don’t own it. Twitter and… the inverted Skype!

Yeah I’m really glad I asked about the tagline because a bunch of you have been giving great feedback on that too. Thanks for the impromptu research. It’ll definitely be my first keyword.

Sorry…Not a fan of any of these. Your logo should appeal to guys and gals. This philosophy will eliminate a few. The others are a bit young for what seems to be you audience.

Try a symbol that you remember as a kid that said you were bigger than your own shoes. How about these for a few teasers:
1)Rearview of the back of a young person being a oversized laptop.
2) tip toes paying at a counter
3) cartoon child reading The Times
4) small feet in grownup shoes
5) height chart with child standing on symbolilic object to appear taller( business books)
6) over flowing piggy bank
7) child in an oversized bean counter hat
8) child looking I to a crystal ball with a grownup reflection of themselves.
9) child standing in front of a mirror with a grownup reflection of themselves
10) Evolution of a child to a teen mowing the grass( crawl, walk, toy mower, real mower)
Good Luck!!!

I think U Mike has pointed out some really great examples… except for the contradiction he made by listing his examples above. While the logo should appeal to young members, it should also keep in mind the 14 – 16 year old kids who don’t necessarily respond well to symbols such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10. Ideas such as this are to elaborate. Logos work better if they are conceptually strong and simple. While there are elaborate logos that exist, companies such as Nike, Target, Macaroni Grill, Starbucks ( to name a few) thrive just as well with there marks as do many other businesses. While its true a younger audience may not respond well to these conceptual masterpieces, let it be known that examples 1 – 10, as mike listed above, boils down to just plain bad advice. And while i do have reservations about the student groups work, it looks like some of them have a firm understanding about the basics of logo development. Not bad for rough drafts.

Hey Voice (if that’s your real name…), thanks for your comment. I think Mike was just rattling off anything and everything he thought of; which I appreciate. However, you’re right that most of those ideas would appeal to a much younger audience. There’s a lot to think about when considering a logo. I give props to Ad Infinitum, because it’s incredible challenging and there’s always going to be criticism.

Wow, U Mike, you’re more creative than you look! My favorite out of the 10 is the overflowing piggy bank. Thanks for the input.

Option 3 is the most recognizable and memorable. It adds color and fun. Your critics may not like it bc a frog has nothing to do the business, but thats the way some of the most popular logos work anyway. I’m thinkin of the Gecko on Life life insurance…

Hey Klint, that’s something I didn’t think about. Interesting take, thanks!

Personally I quite like Option 2. It’s simple, and if you made it a bit better it would look really sharp and professional too.

I must agree with a couple of the comments that think none of them are suitable though. Whilst a few of them are good, you also have to think about branding. Which will be the most recognisable? How does the logo tie in with your site?

I hope you don’t mind me posting a link (feel free to edit it out), but this article on my site might share some info:

Hey Simon! I’m glad you commented because I know you’ve done quite a bit of work with your logo. So thanks!

You’re right about the whole branding thing. I’m planning on choosing a logo then redeveloping my site around the logo. So it’s especially important to me.

And thanks for sharing your article. You make some really good points there, too.

In the future, I give you permission to post as many links to your site as you want on JuniorBiz.com. I know whoever stops here can benefit from your site as well. Seriously!

Did you say the ad agency is student-run? I can see that. I’m not putting them down but their quality just doesn’t match up to the real world. If you would like to see real world standards, I’d suggest you visit http://99designs.com/

But if you’d really want me to choose, I’d say Option 5, because it portrays a business-like look.

Hey Charles, thanks for the comment! I think part of the reason they don’t look as professional is because what you see isn’t the original file. I had to use PrintScreen to get them on here and they’re a little blurry.

Yeah, I’ve heard of 99designs.com before and that’s a cool site. Thanks for sharing.

Your favorite logo option – Option 5
Why it’s your favorite -It goes well with your sites niche.
How you would improve that logo (i.e. colors, etc.)- Make the tie go with your color scheme.

Hey Nick, I know how hard it is to choose a logo…I just changed the logo at Asnio and I made like 3 or 4 different versions of it. Wasn’t easy picking the best!

Here, I would have to say option 5 is the best. The only thing that I am thinking is if you are just going to stick that in the header would be to remove the grass, clouds and birds in the header. A tie wouldn’t work at all with that header!

If you keep the same header, then I think option 1 or 3 would work best, but they’re not my favorites.

Good luck!

Hey Alex! Yeah I saw that you just changed your logo there.

I’m actually in the process of completely redesigning my site. It’s going to look completely different than it does here. This is a free template, so I don’t own any of it.

Thanks for the comment, man. I appreciate it!

I really just do not like any of these. I would say number 5 if I had to pick, but I’m not a major fan of the designs…If you do go with number five, maybe put the tie in “junior” instead of Biz?

Reply

32 Nick Tart June 28, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Hey Corey, thanks for the feedback. If I choose 5 I would want to leave the tie in “Biz” because I would put the tagline directly underneath “JuniorB”iz.
